About the Department:

The Department of Statistics currently comprises 21 primary faculty members, and numerous adjunct and affiliated faculty. It offers a B.S. degree in Statistics, a Ph.D. degree in Statistical Science, and two M.S. degrees: Statistical Science and Biostatistics, as well as the Concentration in Statistical Data Science within MS Statistical Science. Though a relatively young department founded in 1992, the Department has demonstrated rapid growth in research and scholarship. The faculty is renowned with leaders in statistics, biostatistics, data science, and AI, with national and international credentials. It engages in research with leading corporations and government agencies, such as, the INOVA Health, one of the leading hospitals in the nation. The Department has a distinct potential for innovations in statistics, data science, and interdisciplinary research spanning medicine, engineering, economics, technology, and society.

Situated on the beautiful Fairfax, VA campus in the high-tech corridor of Northern Virginia, the department is conveniently located 30 minutes from both downtown Washington, D.C., and Dulles International Airport, with top-ranked high schools in the country, and easy access to engineering and computing departments within the College of Engineering and Computing, as well as other colleges. About the Position:

The Department of Statistics invites applications for multiple term faculty positions beginning Fall 2024.

Candidates to this positions will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, participating in university, college and departmental governance; professional and public service; advising students; and performing related instructional assignments, such as supervising senior projects, student internships and practicum. Conducting research is optional.

Applicants at the rank of Associate of Full Professor must have interests in outreach, curriculum development, and significant experience in an academic setting in teaching for at least six years post Ph.D.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching classes at the undergraduate and/or graduate level;
  • Performing service duties associated with departmental educational and operational activities; and
  • Participating in student advising.

A senior candidate for Associate or Full Professor is expected to be a leader in curriculum development, education, and outreach activities.

Required Qualifications:

Applicants must have received a Ph.D. in Statistics or a related field, such as Data Science or Biostatistics, by the start date of the position. Applicants should possess a strong commitment to education and demonstrated excellence in teaching. Applicants at the rank of Associate/Full Professor must have interests in outreach, curriculum development, and significant experience in an academic setting for at least six years post Ph.D. Applicants who have received an MS in Statistics or Biostatistics with an exceptional teaching record and skills/interests in using evolving technology, may be considered for a rank of instructor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants in all areas of Statistics will be given consideration. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in the areas of data science and modern statistics. Preference will be given to candidates with significant teaching experience, and good communication skills. Ability to do research and bring research funding, and administrative, managerial, and/or consulting experience will be a plus. Ability to build collaborations with other departments within the College and across the University will also be valued.

In 2025, Fuse a new 355,000 square foot building, will open to students, faculty, and research teams.
