About the Department:

The mission of the Enterprise Applications (EA) department is to plan, implement and maintain integrated central and distributed information systems and associated databases that support the business needs of the University.

The Business Intelligence Services (BIS) team configures, maintains and monitors the enterprise Business Intelligence tool. The BIS team creates and maintains the semantic layer within the tool, which enable access to University data sources, including the enterprise data warehouse. In addition, the BIS team creates standard datasets, reports, and dashboards and supports users of these resources.

About the Position:

The Business Intelligence (BI) Architect:

  • Supports and maintains the MicroStrategy environment, which provides reporting using data from the enterprise data warehouse and other data sources.
  • Configures and maintains the semantic layer within the enterprise BI tool, which enables the development of standard datasets and reporting. Ensures the configuration supports and enforces defined security policy.
  • Performs report development and troubleshooting. Collaborates with stakeholders, subject matter experts, and report users to define reporting requirements and validate results.
  • Assists customers in meeting their reporting needs by ensuring that reports perform well. This includes support for new requests, bug fixes and enhancements as well as troubleshooting customer issues.

Responsibilities:

Develop Complex Reports

  • Using knowledge of star schemas and relational databases, uses reporting tools such as MicroStrategy to develop complex reports for the university’s administrative and academic units;
  • Independently collaborates with users in developing requirements for data mart reports, using drill-down and cube technologies as necessary to effectively and efficiently meet the reporting needs;
  • Develops prototypes to demonstrate concepts;
  • Develops and maintains requirements and report documentation;
  • Develops and abides by report development standards and best practices;
  • Conducts thorough unit testing on all newly developed and modified reports; and
  • Keeps abreast of new features/technology in MicroStrategy. 

End User Support

  • Acts as principle liaison with business users in the use of MicroStrategy and the underlying metadata/data marts;
  • Develops training material and conducts training sessions for users of the various university Data Marts;
  • Assists the MicroStrategy Administrator in report trouble-shooting and problem resolution;
  • Supports users in the use of the MicroStrategy; provides one-one consulting/assistance to report developers as needed/requested; and
  • Periodically serves as the primary point of contact with users regarding support and use of reports developed by the Business Intelligence Services team. 

Data Mart Team Collaboration

  • Assists Data Mart Analysts in the testing of data mart tables and views; and
  • Assists with testing MicroStrategy and database upgrades/patches for functionality, performance and security. 

BI Architecture

  • Defines the semantic layer within the BI tool, enabling access to data sources and generation of datasets to support reporting and analysis;
  • Ensures the accuracy of results through unit and regression testing of datasets;
  • Implements access controls to align with defined data security policy, enabling data element access as defined by data stewards;
  • Manages the migration of objects between the development, UAT and production environments, including definition of procedures and best practices; and
  • Supports performance tuning of reporting queries using a variety of techniques, including using VLDB properties and by interacting with DBA’s and database designers. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Typically, 5+ years of experience in a BI Developer/Architect role utilizing MicroStrategy;
  • Experience in all aspects of software development life cycle for Data Warehouse/BI projects;
  • Experience with Oracle or other relational databases;
  • Knowledge of Data Warehouse design and star schema methodology;
  • Knowledge of SQL queries;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple workstreams simultaneously;
  • Skill developing reports, documents, and dossiers/dashboards in MicroStrategy;
  • Skill configuring the semantic layer/model in MicroStrategy;
  • Skill working with MicroStrategy Architect to build hierarchies, attributes, facts and relationships between various attributes;
  • Ability to perform MicroStrategy object migration, user management, and configuration of security groups, roles, and ACLs;
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team; and
  • Ability to work effectively with systems technical staff and business users.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with the MicroStrategy Cloud environment;
  • Experience transitioning a BI solution from on premise to a cloud environment;
  • Experience with a variety of BI tools, such as Power BI, Tableau, SAS Viya;
  • Knowledge of and experience working with higher education data; and
  • Ability to support MicroStrategy report query optimization, using a variety of techniques, including using VLDB properties and by interacting with DBA’s and database designers.
