About the Department:

Disability Services ensures equitable access to George Mason University's programs and services for qualified students with disabilities. A qualified student with a disability is a student with a disability who meets the academic and technical standards required for admission or participation in the university's education program and services. As defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a person has a disability if they have a record of such an impairment, or is regarded as having such an impairment. Disability Services strives to foster partnerships with students, faculty, and staff to create environments that are accessible and all inclusive.

About the Position:

The Access Consultant reports directly to the Associate Director of Disability Services. The Access Consultant works with students to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations and services to which the students are entitled to under the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Applying independent judgment and expertise, the Access Consultant interacts with faculty, parents, and students; serves on university committees representing disability/accessibility-related issues and concerns; and engages in activities that promote campus accessibility, awareness, and inclusive design.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements reasonable accommodations for students by developing, monitoring, adjusting, and evaluating individual accommodation plans;
  • Maintains confidential student records to ensure files are in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADAA of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations, by recording and tracking correspondence and compiling student information;
  • Provides students access as necessary through accommodations, both inside and outside the classroom, ensuring their academic needs are met consistently;
  • Provides faculty with guidance and resources on how to implement and support accommodations;
  • Acts as a liaison between students and faculty, ensuring students’ rights and accommodations are properly addressed, thus advocating for equitable access;
  • Works collaboratively with Disability Services staff to review and interpret confidential medical and psychological evaluations in order to determine student eligibility for services and appropriate accommodations;
  • Organizes and conducts educational sessions for campus and community stakeholders on Disability Services, the accommodations process, universal design, and campus accessibility through presentations, tables fairs, and training sessions; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience; 
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities;
  • Working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the ADAA of 2008, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other appropriate laws;
  • Knowledge of psycho-educational assessments and disability-related accommodations;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a group and/or independently with individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to monitor extensive details while focusing on overall program mission; and
  • Ability to work early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends on occasion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience reading/interpreting psycho-educational, neuropsychological, and other assessment-based reports;
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a post-secondary education environment;
  • Experience documenting written decisions and case progress;
  • Experience with creating presentations or workshops and presenting to internal and external stakeholders/partners;
  • Experience with various Assistive Technologies;
  • Experience with administrative/programmatic tasks;
  • Experience working in a post-secondary educational environment;
  • Working knowledge of accommodation process in higher education;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in higher education for students with disabilities; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of disability studies, disability identity, disability culture, disability history and rights, and universal design.
