About the Position:

The Director of Strength and Conditioning Coach provides comprehensive training programs to the student-athlete of George Mason University. These programs are to be designed to decrease the occurrence of preventable injury and enhance athletic performance in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicates and interacts at the highest level with applicable athletic department administration, sports medicine, sports science, sports psychology, sports nutrition, and academic support;
  • Reports to the Deputy AD for Student Services and Performance but operates without direct supervision in all areas of responsibility within the National Collegiate Athletic Association, (NCAA), Atlantic 10 Confer nee (A-10), and University guidelines; 
  • Directs comprehensive programs for the University's student-athletes in a safe environment. These programs are to be designed decrease the occurrence of preventable injury, enhance athletic performance and provide the student-athlete with a better understanding of one's self;
  •  Assigned team(s) that they will be directly responsible for all strength and condition needs;
  • Designs and implements a comprehensive strength and conditioning program for the student-athletes that will encourage safe and productive training;
  • Schedules facility use by intercollegiate athletic teams and individual student-athletes and participates in a regular maintenance schedule for weight room equipment;
  • Researches, develops, and implements a progressive and dynamic athletic performance enhancement program for student-athletes that ensures a state-of-the-art approach to strength and conditioning, injury prevention and nutrition;
  • Directs applications of scientifically proven performance enhancement initiatives in the areas of strength power, speed, agility, flexibility, conditioning, injury prevention and nutrition;
  • Collaborates with leadership within various athletic departments and academic units;
  • Hires and trains members of the strength and conditioning staff, assign staff members to workout equipment safety techniques and emergency protocol to be utilized in the weight room, and meet with staff members regularly to exchange necessary information.;
  • Provides oversight of the department, make staff selections, conduct evaluations for staff, and make recommendations regarding personnel matters;
  • Regularly meets with the strength and conditioning staff to discuss goals, aspirations, and relevant topics as necessary;
  • Directly responsible for the retention, training, and development of staff;
  • Direct Supervisory Responsibility:
    • Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coaches;
    • Assistant Strength and Conditioning Staff (wage);
    • Strength and Conditioning Interns -Wage staff;
  • Formulates and oversees the annual budget for Strength and Conditioning; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or Athletic Director. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field from an accredited college/university, or equivalent combination of education and experience.;
  • Substantial experience in collegiate strength and conditioning coaching;
  • Must be available to work a flexible schedule to include weekends, nights, and holidays;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Atlantic 10, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rules and Regulations;
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Advanced organizational and time-management skills;
  • Ability to motivate and inspire players to achieve their full potential;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends;
  • Display leadership qualities with the ability to hire, schedule, train, and motivate staff;
  • Ability to maintain general maintenance and perform repairs to weight room equipment;
  • Valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to the start date. Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) with employment contingent upon a favorable review;
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA;
  • Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) through the CSCCa; and
  • Certification in: AHA or ARC: CPR/AED/First Aid.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology or a related field from an accredited college/university, or equivalent experience;
  • Experience using load monitoring technology such as Catapult and Polar;
  • Certified in Nutrition to better support the student athletes and enhance the multi-disciplinary approach; and
  • Experience using sport science technology and implementing it into training. (VO2Max, Isokinetic machine, DEXA Scan, Force Plates).
