Responsibilities:

The Housekeeping Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of housekeeping employees for the assigned campus. Assists the Housekeeping Operations Manager in duties of planning and scheduling work assignments. This is a working supervisor and serves as a Lead Housekeeper, assisting as needed on site and to respond to emergency situations.

Employee may be required to work additional hours in the event of an emergency. This may require reporting to work early, staying late, and/or working weekends. Employee is also designated as “Essential Personnel.” All essential personnel employees are required to report for snow removal or other emergency when assigned. Willingly accepts emergency overtime assignments and is available and responsive to after-hours call-outs.

  • Responsible for setting goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the university's plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates;
  • Organizes workflow and ensures that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks;
  • Monitors employee productivity and provides constructive feedback and coaching;
  • Receives complaints and resolves problems;
  • Maintains timekeeping and personnel records;
  • Passes on information from upper management to employees and vice versa;
  • Prepares and submits performance evaluations;
  • Decides on rewards and promotions based on performance;
  • Hires and trains new employees;
  • Ensures adherence to legal and university policies and procedures and undertakes disciplinary actions if the need arises;
  • Supervises Housekeepers and Lead Housekeeper;
  • Creates and maintains staff schedules;
  • Trains housekeepers on cleaning protocols and use of equipment;
  • Ensures adequate staffing levels and reports issues to management;
  • Cleans and oversees the cleaning of common areas, classrooms, hallways, waxes and buff floors;
  • Cleans and oversees the cleaning of offices and classrooms to include desks, dusting, window ledges, window glass, furniture, doors, vacuuming, white boards and emptying trash;
  • Cleans and oversees cleaning and restocking of bathrooms, removes trash (daily), reports all matters of safety to the appropriate supervisor;
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and operative working relationship with members of the department and the campus community;
  • Effectively performs in a service environment;
  • Follows all State, University and departmental policies, procedures and practices;
  • Orders additional cleaning supplies to maintain the appropriate level in respective housekeeping closets;
  • Performs all duties listed with minimal supervision, and with a high level of quality;
  • Ensures work is completed within acceptable timeframes and passes inspection; and
  • Other related duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated related work experience (typically 1+ year) or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired;
  • General knowledge of cleaning terms and safety procedures related to hazardous cleaning chemicals;
  • Ability to read, understand and abide by all safety policies and procedures;
  • Ability to read and follow cleaning instructions and schedules;
  • Ability to practice effective oral communication skills with students, faculty and staff;
  • Ability to work independently, without close supervision;
  • Ability to remain calm during stress periods; and
  • Valid Driver's License in order to operate fleet vehicles. Valid driver's license: must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Experience in use of mechanical cleaning equipment is preferred.
