About the Department:

The School of Nursing prepares students for interdisciplinary roles as clinicians, educators, researchers, and administrators. Our students learn to address the challenges of a rapidly changing and diverse health care environment with hands-on experience in our simulation and skills labs and our Mason and Partners clinics. Their experience working with the culturally diverse patient population in the Northern Virginia area provides them with the necessary skills to deliver health care where it’s needed the most.

About the Position:

The Lab and Simulation Manager leads the day-to-day operations of the nursing skills lab and provides support for simulation and immersive learning activities. This role ensures high-quality laboratory-based education by managing lab logistics, coordinating adjunct lab faculty, and maintaining strong partnerships with course faculty. The manager also contributes to the development of simulation-based, immersive learning and clinical readiness initiatives in collaboration with the Chief Innovation Officer and CHSE instructional teams. While the focus is on clinical readiness and lab, the role includes active engagement in simulation and immersive technologies.

Responsibilities:

Daily Lab Operations:

  • Oversees daily operations of the nursing skills lab including lab setup, breakdown, equipment functionality, inventory, and material management (in collaboration with SOS, faculty, and staff); and
  • Coordinates lab scheduling and student participation in clinical skills and simulation/immersive technologies sessions.

Lab Scheduling and Faculty Collaboration:

  • Works closely with course faculty to align lab, simulation/immersive technologies, and clinical activities to align curriculum and design effective experiences; and
  • Orients, schedules, and supports adjunct faculty assigned to lab, simulation/immersive technologies, and clinical instruction; and
  • Assists with the recruitment and onboarding process.

Laboratory Instruction:

  • Provides logistical and instructional support for lab, simulation/immersive technologies, and clinical readiness activities; and
  • Ensures compliance with best practices and safety standards in lab, simulation/immersive technologies settings.

Vendor Outreach and Maintenance:

  • Collaborates with the College of Public Health and School of Nursing leadership to manage supply ordering, vendor relationships, and service contracts for lab, simulation/immersive technologies equipment;
  • Participates in ongoing quality improvement efforts and pursues opportunities for innovation in lab, simulation/immersive technologies education; and
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience in clinical education or skills-based instruction in healthcare;
  • Interpersonal communication and organizational skills;
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience managing health profession skills labs or simulation centers;
  • Experience with software tracking tools (e.g., MS Excel, inventory or simulation platform);
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in simulation-based education;
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification;
  • Knowledge of A-V equipment and software for recording, duplication, mixing, and editing of recorded scenarios;
  • Knowledge of simulation best practices, including low, medium, or high-fidelity simulation tools;
  • Demonstrated organizational skills;
  • Ability to provide additional education to faculty in simulation exercises;
  • Ability to manage complex scheduling, supply procurement, and staff coordination;
  • Familiarity with immersive technologies (e.g., virtual or augmented reality); and
  • Familiarity with lab-based teaching and learning environments.
