About the Department:

The Center for the Arts is George Mason University’s home for the performing arts on the Fairfax campus. Mason is Virginia’s largest and most diverse public research university and the College of Visual and Performing Arts, which operates the Center for the Arts, is one of the university’s most visible program, serving hundreds of thousands of people through arts experiences each year.

The Center for the Arts is often called the “front door” of George Mason University, as the Washington, D.C. metro area community visits Mason for performances by renowned International, national and regional artists, students and faculty productions and community events.

About the Position:

The Production Coordinator will work directly with the Production Manager to oversee all aspects of production at the Center for the Arts. These will include (but not be limited to) supplemental crew staffing and supervision, show advancement, stage management, administrative coordination, and organizing special project initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of theatre technology and practices, knowledge of stage management, experienced with a variety of performance idioms (drama, dance, opera, musical, etc.). Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in relevant area or equivalent on the job experience.

This position requires frequent evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides management of stage activities for specified Concert Hall events and adjunct activities;
  • Acts as direct supervisor to crew wage employees. Supervision of crew includes but is not limited to: Identifying crew staffing needs, organizing crew schedule, payroll, and communications for all events;
  • Makes appropriate preparations to fulfill the requirements of assigned events;
  • Coordinates and assists with fulfillment of technical information for booked-in events; 
  • Assists the Production Manager with clerical and fiscal aspects of production and special project initiatives;
  • Assists with security and parking logistics of artist residency activities;
  • Produces the event summary report following each event in the Concert Hall;
  • Schedules and supervises wage production assistant and other wage stage managers;
  • Performs occasional supervision of crew for facility preparations for events;
  • Performs occasional operation of stage machinery such as lighting, audio, and rigging equipment as needed to facilitate rehearsals and performances;
  • Performs general stage duties including stage preparations and restoration of facilities and equipment; 
  • Participates in regular staff, event and production meetings; and
  • Coordinates stage management department with other production departments for effective overall management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant area of theatre management or equivalent on-the-job experience;
  • Knowledge of theatre technology, including lighting, sound, and staging;
  • Knowledge of stage management, experienced with a variety of performance idioms (drama, dance, opera, musical, etc.);
  • Ability to provide professional assistance to facilitate and coordinate the elements of production to fulfill artistic integrity, possess skills to interact successfully with a wide variety of personalities;
  • Experience with scheduling, multi-season calendar maintenance, theatrical paperwork and notation, Microsoft Office Suite; 
  • Generally knowledgeable and experienced in theatre technology and management such that the individual can efficiently lead the mounting of a performance or event; and
  • Basic technical skills (such as lights, carpentry, audio, and rigging) are needed to effectively execute a rehearsal and/or performance. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field;
  • Experience with creating and reading deck and cue calling paperwork; and
  • Skills in leadership, collaboration, and initiative.
