About the Position:

The Sports Dietitian is responsible for overseeing all nutrition services for George Mason University student-athletes. The role focuses on providing education, counseling, and individualized support to enhance health, performance, and recovery.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide nutrition education, counseling, and support to all sports programs;
  • Conduct regular meetings with high-risk individuals as identified in collaboration with the Sports Performance team;
  • Conduct periodic team nutrition meetings throughout the year;
  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance of student athletes in the context of athletic performance and health;
  • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery from exercise, return to play from injury, weight management, hydration, immunity, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation;
  • Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, and macro/micro-nutrient deficiencies;
  • Coordinate grocery tours for team nutrition education;
  • Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff to manage weight room fueling station;
  • Attend staff meetings for men’s and women’s basketball at a minimum on a monthly basis, and provide updates on student athlete’s progress;
  • Collaborate and maintain regular communication with Sports Performance staff regarding travel nutrition needs and meal planning during in-season travel;
  • Communicate with relevant members of the Sports Performance department regarding student athletes progress or areas for improvement;
  • Collaborate with the Department of Nutrition and Food Studies to support internships, in sports nutrition and serve as preceptor for dietetics students with Mason Athletics, and to utilize Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA);
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with the rules and regulations regarding banned drugs and restricted substances for additional athletic governing bodies, including the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA);
  • Meet with prospective student athletes as a part of the recruiting process, as requested;
  • Develop nutrition education materials (digital and print); and
  • Support the goals and initiatives of the Sports Performance department. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in nutrition/dietetics, exercise science, sports administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Credentialed as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration;
  • Generally, a minimum of two (2) years of work experience as a registered dietitian;
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with all members of the Performance staff and other athletic department personnel;
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, demanding work environment; and
  • Ability and willingness to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) or progression towards certification;
  • Experience (typically 2-3 years) working as a Registered Dietitian at a Division I Institution;
  • Experience (typically 2-3 years) working in the collegiate setting or any athletics setting;
  • Familiar with utilizing DXA to assess body composition;
  • Experience utilizing DXA to assess body composition; and
  • Knowledge and understanding of NCAA, A-10, EIVA, MAC Conference, and institutional rules as they relate to this position.
