About the Department:

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) supports students through ethical and responsive care and prevention. We foster the well-being of the Mason community through psychological, outreach, and consultation services. We provide high-quality training to emerging mental health professionals. We are committed to excellence in psychological services by promoting student safety, enhancing emotional growth, and supporting academic success.

About the Position:

The Staff Psychologist provides individual and group counseling, case management services, crisis intervention (including after-hours consultation), psychological consultation services to students/faculty/family, community education, psychological prevention-related programming, and clinical training for externs and doctoral interns (APA accredited internship) in psychology.

Responsibilities:

Clinical Services:

  • Provides personal consultation, assessment, case management services, individual and group therapy;
  • Completes documentation of services within CAPS guidelines; and
  • Provides crisis assessment/intervention through daytime and after hours on-call systems and provides consultation services to parents, faculty, staff, and students. 

Administrative Services:

  • Participates in CAPS training program through the provision of clinical supervision to CAPS trainees and/or facilitation of training seminars for CAPS trainees;
  • Participates in internal CAPS committees and meetings as identified in performance plan and as related to specific position responsibilities; and
  • Engages in continuing education and professional development to provide services to students from a wide variety of backgrounds. 

Outreach Services:

  • Provides all-inclusive mental health promotions activities to Mason students to increase access and awareness of mental health services, in collaboration with the unit’s Assistant Director, Outreach Services;
  • Collaborates with other Mason offices to create programs to support all students, with a special focus on increasing access to students who experience real or perceived barriers to services; and
  • Provides community education programs to Mason community. 

Unit and Divisional Support and Engagement:

  • Supports divisional planning initiatives and other special projects as assigned;
  • Actively participates in UL divisional meetings, initiatives, and in-person events to stay connected with divisional and institutional priorities, and to foster a cross-unit collaboration;
  • Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions for staff across the division to promote continuous learning and skill enhancement;
  • Stays informed about best practices, research, and emerging trends in higher education and student support services to ensure CAPS remains innovative and responsive to the evolving needs of the student body;
  • Supports and volunteers at divisional programs and events, contributing to a culture of service and community within the division; and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience working on a multidisciplinary team;
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment;
  • Experience providing short-term treatment and crisis intervention;
  • Experience providing individual and group counseling services to clients;
  • Clinical, outreach, and training experience serving individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds, with a focus on health promotion activities to increase access to mental health care;
  • Knowledge gained by graduating from an accredited doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology;
  • Ability to maintain and possess a current, unrestricted license as a Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 3 months of hire;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals from different perspectives and backgrounds; and
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively on a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with counseling in collegiate mental health or similar developmental populations;
  • Experience providing clinical consultation to university administration, faculty, staff, students, and families;
  • Experience providing outreach services;
  • Experience providing supervision to trainees; and
  • Knowledge of clinical services earned by working in a university counseling center.
