About the Department:

George Mason University’s College of Public Health prepares students to become leaders in advancing public health through academic excellence, innovative research, and community-focused practice. Founded in 2006, the Department of Global and Community Health offers CEPH-accredited programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. Academic offerings include a BS in Community Health; MS in Global Health; MPH with concentrations in Community Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Global Health, Health Policy, and Public Health Practice; and a PhD in Public Health with concentrations in Epidemiology and Social and Behavioral Sciences. The department also provides graduate certificates in Public Health, Global Health, and Epidemiology. Its programs enroll hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, supported by more than 20 full-time faculty members with expertise in community health, global health, environmental health, biostatistics, epidemiology, and social and behavioral sciences. Faculty and students are deeply committed to advancing health equity and social justice among underserved populations both domestically and globally.

About the Position:

The primary purpose of this tenured faculty position is to advance the mission of the university through teaching, research, and service. Faculty are expected to provide high‑quality instruction, conduct and disseminate impactful scholarship, and contribute to professional, university, and community service that strengthens both the institution and the field. In addition to these responsibilities, the position includes an assignment as Department Chair. The Department Chair position will be filled by a tenured professor with a 12‑month appointment. The Chair will provide visionary leadership for the department’s academic, research, and service mission, while managing fiscal resources.

Responsibilities:

Teaching:

  • Teaches courses across the undergraduate and graduate program curriculum;
  • Develops and delivers course content;
  • Serves as a faculty member in both undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring curriculum relevance, contributing to program evaluation, supporting academic and professional advising for students and alumni, and managing accreditation processes; and
  • As Chair, teaches one course each academic year.

Research:

  • Conducts research and scholarship;
  • Engages in scholarly or creative work;
  • Seeks opportunities to advance knowledge; and
  • Collaborates with colleagues.

Service:

  • Serves on department, College of Public Health, and University‑level committees and working groups; and
  • Participates in professional activities.

Chair Leadership:

  • Provides visionary, innovative leadership, including fiscal oversight;
  • Leads faculty recruitment and promotes mentorship of early- and mid-career faculty;
  • Facilitates professional development for all faculty and staff;
  • Strengthens the graduate academic enterprise;
  • Promotes the department to internal and external stakeholders in alignment with College and University strategic goals;
  • Serves as a strong advocate for the department with excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • Engages in transparent decision‑making while nurturing a culture of consensus, collaboration, and respect.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctoral degree in a relevant discipline;
  • Experience in academic teaching, curriculum development, and program evaluation;
  • Record of scholarly publications in peer reviewed journals;
  • History of securing external research funding;
  • Progressive leadership experience;
  • Expertise in relevant subject matter;
  • In‑depth knowledge of research strategies and data analysis methods;
  • Proficiency and knowledge of educational practices and instructional strategies;
  • Teaching and facilitation skills across varied formats;
  • Skilled in research design and dissemination of findings;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Collaboration and leadership skills within professional settings;
  • Adaptability to different environments and learning needs;
  • Critical and reflective thinking abilities;
  • Ability to problem solve in academic and organizational contexts; and
  • Ability to mentor and provide guidance for students or colleagues.

  • Ability to foster a collegial and respectful environment.
