About the Position:

The George Mason University, College of Education and Human Development, Division of Special Education and disAbility Research seeks applicants to fill a temporary position (through spring and into summer 2024) as an Academic Advising Assistant to work with undergraduate and graduate students in Bachelor’s, minors, Master’s, and graduate certificate programs in special education and assistive technology. The assistant will work with the Program Advisor to refer students to applicable resources, outline clear pathways for program completion, review records for graduation, and initiate and process academic actions.  

Responsibilities:

  • Interface with a diverse body of students regarding degree requirements, application deadlines, registration, program information, and general student inquiries;
  • Advise graduate and undergraduate students in the special education and assistive technology programs on academic requirements, programs-of-study, and administrative procedures; 
  • Create academic course plans for students. Use the Navigate Mason system to book and report on appointments. Facilitate onboarding of new students;  
  • Maintain timely and accurate student records in accordance with Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Use Ellucian Banner (INB) systems to review and update student records as needed; 
  • Provide timely and accurate follow-up communication with students and stakeholders;
  • Collaborate with relevant faculty and staff to ensure superior customer service; and
  • Provide advisor support at orientations and recruitment events.

Required Qualifications:

  • Outstanding professional oral and written communication skills; 
  • Ability to manage sensitive and/or confidential student information; 
  • Familiarity with George Mason University policies and systems, including Patriot Web and Degree Works; 
  • Computer literacy and the ability to achieve proficiency with Ellucian Banner and Salesforce; 
  • Proven ability to work positively as a team member; and 
  • Customer service experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using INB/Banner student management system;
  • Understanding of the Navigate Mason system;
  • Familiarity with academic actions including form processing and catalog policies; and
  • Previous college/university admission, enrollment, or transfer advising experience.
