About the Department:

Mason's School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (S-CAR) is committed to interrupting cycles of violence through rigorous academic programs and innovative work in the field. The student services staff at the Carter School is dedicated to creating on-going, personal and purposeful educational partnerships with students and colleagues. Committed to a student-centered approach, we provide resources, programming and guidance to develop the skills required to become life-long reflective learners capable of effective self-advocacy and successful in reaching their educational and career goals.

About the Position:

The Academic Advisor and Communications Coordinator is responsible for providing academic advising/coaching, as well as communications and student services support. The position is part of the Undergraduate Student Services Staff in Fairfax and reports to the Director of Undergraduate Student Services.

This position requires occasional weekend and evening availability.

Responsibilities:

Academic Advising/Coaching

  • Meets with prospective, new and returning Conflict Analysis and Resolution majors and minors to discuss degree requirements, Mason and Carter School policy and procedures for academic actions, development of academic skills, course scheduling, field experience, career readiness, and transitions;
  • Is knowledgeable about all student resources and when appropriate, connects students to offices that provide additional support;
  • Maintains accurate and timely student records in accordance with Mason and Carter School policy;
  • Coordinates with offices across campus to support student needs; and
  • Identifies and assists academically at-risk students.

Communications & Student Services Support

  • Coordinates with faculty and student services staff to promote, organize, and facilitate undergraduate program events; 
  • Coordinates activities that support student success and enhance the undergraduate student experience;
  • Collaborates with internal and external organizations to develop partnerships that could result in enhanced experiences for undergraduate students;
  • Liaises with organizations to gain relevant and current career support for Carter School students;
  • Collects information for, curate, and distribute the twice monthly Carter School undergraduate program newsletter, the monthly non-major newsletter, and the semester highlights newsletter;
  • Maintains current undergraduate and undergraduate alumni listservs;
  • Reviews and provides updates to the undergraduate website;
  • Serves as the point of contact for phone and email inquiries; and
  • Serves as the Navigate liaison and coordinates necessary student communication campaigns. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with communication technology such as social media marketing, newsletter creation, or website content management;
  • Experience in the educational environment, higher education, academic advising, student development, student affairs, and/or a field related to Peace and Conflict Resolution;
  • Knowledge of academic advising, career advising, or a field related to Conflict Resolution;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including a collaborative approach to projects;
  • Exceptional attention to detail;
  • Strong listening skills;
  • Strong cross-cultural understanding or experience with a variety of student populations;
  • Highly organized and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment; and
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in related field.
