About the Position:

The Department of Economics is hiring a part-time Academic Advisor for undergraduate programs. This position will be responsible for providing academic advising and student support across two undergraduate degree programs and one minor.  15 hours per week is standard but additional hours (up to 5) may be available during peak advising times.   

Responsibilities:

  • Provides general and major/minor-specific academic advising;
  • Maintains student advising records;
  • Executes recruitment and retention campaigns in coordination with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) Office of Academic Affairs and Office of Academic Advising;
  • Effectively responds to students' emails regarding advising questions;
  • Provides advising support for programs such as China 1-2-1, Mason Korea, and other international partnerships; and
  • Provides timely referrals to the Associate Chair, and the Economics Undergraduate Program Coordinator.  Additional referrals may include: CHSS Office of Academic Affairs, CHSS Office of Academic Advising, the Mason Student Services Center, Career Services, the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Support and Advocacy Center, Student Health Services, Mason Athletics, the Office of Military Services, the Office of International Programs and Services, and the Center for Global Education.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in a higher education environment, to include academic advising;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office or Mac-based equivalents (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams); basic web design and social media skills;
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and time-management skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines, particularly during periods of peak advising needs (e.g., orientations, registration cycles, etc.); and
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment with frequent technology, software, and policy updates.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Economics degree or a related field;
  • Experience working in academic advising at the undergraduate level; and
  • Knowledge of Mason Patriot Web, Patriot Connect, Stellic, Canvas.
