About the Department:

The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as master’s degrees in Digital Forensics and Telecommunications. The department is home to 30 faculty members and over 800 students, including about 300 graduate students. The department’s research portfolio is thriving, with faculty actively engaged in research in a diverse range of fields such as bioengineering, communications and networking, computer engineering, controls and robotics, cyber-physical systems, cyber security, digital forensics, machine learning, nanoelectronics, power systems, signal processing, and space-based systems. The ECE department also supports other Mason Engineering programs through interdisciplinary collaboration in both education and research and has close ties with other departments such as the Departments of Bioengineering, Computer Science, Cyber Security Engineering, Information Sciences and Technology, and Mechanical Engineering. Projects and hands-on activities are at the core of many of our educational programs where interdisciplinary projects and courses are highly integrated into the curriculum. Thousands of students have graduated from the department’s accredited programs and gone on to prosperous careers in engineering and related fields. The department has close collaborations with the industry and receives strategic direction and insight on cutting edge technologies from its company partners and industrial advisory board that translates into innovative curricular and research initiatives. About the College

The College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and the School of Computing. The College is a fast-growing force for innovation in research and education. Ranked nationally in the top 100 in both undergraduate and graduate education, the College boasts more than 11,000 students in 37 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degree programs, including several first-in-the-nation offerings. About the Position:

The George Mason University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) invites applications for the position of Department Chair. Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Department Chair is the chief academic and administrative leader for the department and serves as a key member of the College’s leadership team;
  • The Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering will provide vision and leadership to advance the department, positioning the department as a leader in innovation and education in electrical and computer engineering; and
  • They will guide a robust scholarship and research agenda, promote excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, including the development of collaborative academic programs, and grow the overall student enrollment of the department including the proportion of women and underrepresented minorities in the educational programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have received a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field and qualify to be a tenured professor in the department;
  • Applicants must have an outstanding record in research with strong evidence of funding; 
  • Possess an outstanding record of teaching and educational leadership;
  • Possess a track record of effective mentoring of peers, staff, and students;
  • Demonstrated leadership experience;
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills;
  • Unassailable personal and academic integrity; and
  • Possess a vision to advance the department to new heights through a strong sense of where the field is headed and an understanding of its sub-disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have previous administrative experience and demonstrated experience with inter-disciplinary teams.
