About the Department:

The Institute for Biohealth Innovation (IBI) is a discovery and innovation engine designed to enhance the university’s research portfolio in the bio- and health sciences, and engineering and public policy domains; while also driving economic growth in the Commonwealth’s biotech and health sciences industries.

About the Position:

The MRI Technologist reports to the MRI Scientific Director and works closely with the Office of Environmental Health and Laboratory Safety, faculty, and students. The MRI Technologist supports research activities conducted within the MRI suite and implements the MRI Safety Program. This position requires excellent interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

MRI Scanner Operation 

  • Operates the MRI scanner to include routine and experimental setup and modification of scanning parameters to optimize data;
  • Performs daily quality assurance testing;
  • Trouble-shoots scanner malfunction;
  • Maintains documentation and records for participant screening, quality assurance data, incidental findings, and scanning time;
  • Organizes, archives, and facilitates the transfer of acquired imaging data; and
  • Assists with the review and notification of incidental findings. 

MRI Safety Management 

  • Participates in the continued development of policies and procedures for safety and operations of the MRI suite;
  • Conducts safety screening of all users of the MRI suite and approves or denies access to the suite based on training proficiency and screening results;
  • In cooperation with the Environmental Health & Safety Office, facilitates user compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements regarding MRI safety and operations; Ceases or suspends unsafe activities and instances of non-compliance until issues are resolved and corrective actions are taken;
  • Reports unsafe activities and issues of non-compliance to the MRI director, IBI Executive Director, and Director of Environmental Health and Laboratory Safety;
  • Maintains documentation and records for safety and compliance and training and ensure files are shared with the Environmental Health and Laboratory Safety Office; and
  • Responds to any incidents or emergencies within the MRI suite that occur during and after normal work hours as needed. 

Support users of the MRI Scanner 

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of MRI training for all users to include faculty, graduate students, and any other users designated by the MRI Scientific Director;
  • Works with investigators to design and implement new and existing MRI research scanning protocols; and
  • Ensures all users complete and have up-to-date MRI safety training provided by the Environmental Health and Laboratory Safety Office. 

Research Participant Care 

  • Greets and interviews research participants;
  • Provides research participant with an overview of the procedure to be performed and answer relevant questions;
  • Conducts a thorough pre-screening of participants in accordance with the MRI P&P and the research protocol;
  • Ensures time outs are conducted for research subject, user and equipment before advancing to Zone 3;
  • Prepares research participant for scanning;
  • Converses with research participant during scanning;
  • Removes research participant from the scanner; and
  • Conducts follow-up interviews with research participant after scanning.

Supervise MRI Lab Staff 

  • Hires, trains, and supervises MRI technologists; and
  • Develops and executes MRI scanning schedule to ensure access to the core facility during regular business hours, evenings, and weekends. 

Oversee Service, Maintenance and Operations for the MRI Suite 

  • Ensures all necessary service contracts are in place for service, maintenance, and operations within the MRI suite;
  • Coordinates with service engineers;
  • Maintains documentation and records for service and maintenance;
  • Monitors and ensures temperature requirements are maintained for the scanner (water and helium levels);
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of the MRI facility to include cleaning floors and surfaces, and leaving trash can outside of the facility to be emptied by housekeeping staff;
  • Assures a safe work environment for facilities personnel to conduct maintenance services;
  • Maintains supply of disposable equipment and other supplies for the MRI suite;
  • Coordinates with the IBI Office Manager to facilitate billing;
  • Coordinates with IBI Executive Director to provide access to authorized individuals; and
  • Coordinates with Facilities, EHS, and University Police as necessary regarding maintenance, safety, incident response, and security of the MRI suite. -

Required Qualifications:

  • Vocational or technical training in related field;
  • Demonstrated experience working as an MRI technologist (typically two or more years);
  • Successful completion of AMA-sponsored School of Radiologic Technology program;
  • Ability to safely and independently move, push, and pull heavy equipment, supplies and subjects;
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot MRI equipment;
  • Proven collaborative and professional skills and customer service orientation;
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills to include basic computer skills;
  • Proven organization and multi-tasking skills;
  • Willingness to learn new skills; and
  • Possess current American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) MRI certification and CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field;
  • Experience working as an MRI Technologist in a research setting;
  • Experience working with a Siemens 3T Full Body MRI system; and
  • Administrative or operations experience.
