About the Department:

The Office of Marketing and Communications within University Life supports the division's efforts to engage all of the Mason community.

About the Position:

The University Life Office of Marketing and Communications is seeking skilled and versatile writers to join the team. A successful candidate will have excellent writing, interviewing, and grammatical skills, with the ability to produce a wide range of content, including press releases, feature stories, persuasive articles, and both long and short features for magazines and other print/digital publications. This is a part-time, hourly wage position with flexible scheduling, based on availability, bandwidth, and available projects.

Responsibilities: 

Content Creation

  • Develop and write engaging content for various platforms, including but not limited to:
    • Press releases;
    • Feature stories;
    • Persuasive articles;
    • Letters from the Vice President;
    • Long and short stories for magazines; and
    • Other marketing materials as needed.

Interviews

  • Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders to gather information for content creation as needed.

Editing and Proofreading

  • Ensure all content is well-researched, grammatically correct, and free of errors.

Project Management

  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and adapting to changing priorities.

Communication

Communication with supervisors, marketing team and other stakeholders to understand project requirements and provide updates on progress.

Flexibility

  • Be prepared to work on projects throughout the year, with varying levels of workload. Some periods may have minimal work, while others may require more extensive involvement.

Required Qualifications:

  • Prior writing experience, preferably in a freelance or marketing context;
  • Effective writing and editing skills;
  • Demonstrated research abilities;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Effective communication and time management skills;
  • Proficiency in mainstream word processing software; and
  • A portfolio of writing samples demonstrating versatility and quality.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior writing experience with pieces featured in high-level, national publications.
